Tips for Sustainable Holidays at Ruka

At Ruka, we want your holiday in the fell to be good not only for you and your loved ones, but also for nature and the local community. Every small and large action matters – here are some easy tips to make your holiday even more sustainable:

1. Travel and move wisely

  • You can reach Ruka by taking the overnight train to Kemijärvi and continuing by bus – try a more sustainable way to travel.
  • Once here, you can easily reach the slopes and various parts of the fell with the SkiBus during winter. The bus is free with a valid Ruka lift pass or when carrying skiing or snowboarding equipment.
  • With the Village-2-Valley scenic gondola, you can cross the fell using renewable energy.

2. Stay responsibly

  • Choose accommodation that prioritizes sustainability: recycling options, use of renewable energy, and recognized sustainability certifications, such as the Green Key at Ski-Inn.
  • Turn off lights and electrical devices when not in use.
  • Short showers feel refreshing and save energy and water.
  • In Ski-Inn accommodations, the sauna heats up in just 30 minutes. Avoid keeping it on unnecessarily.
  • Keep windows and doors closed in winter to prevent heat loss.
  • Order cleaning services only when needed – fresh linens don’t need to be washed unnecessarily.

3. Leave only ski tracks

  • On slopes, tracks, and everywhere else, litter belongs in bins – or in your pocket until you find a disposal point.
  • In Ski-Inn accommodations, you can sort bio-waste, plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, paper, and combustible waste. Public Rinki recycling points are shown on the map.
  • When exploring nature, stay on marked trails and paths. Check out the hiking etiquette guidelines beforehand.
  • Try experiences that respect nature: snowshoeing, ski touring, or watching the Northern Lights.

4. Be considerate of others

  • Familiarize yourself with slope safety. Behave respectfully towards others on the slopes, trails, and everywhere else.
  • Always intervene in inappropriate behaviour and offer help when needed. Our staff is always there to support you.
  • Take the opportunity to meet new people if you wish.

5. Eat and buy local

  • Choose local flavors from restaurant menus.
  • Find souvenirs from local artisans and small businesses in Ruka and Kuusamo.
